Ludwig van Beethoven
German Classical and Romantic Composer
(1770-1827)
Beethoven was known as one of the
most gifted pianists and violists of all
time. His music expresses a humanistic
sense derived from an era of
revolution. Influenced heavily by
Haydn and Mozart, his sound became
all its own with the addition of his
intense energy. This style was best
announced in his Third Symphony,
which to many marks the beginning of
the Romantic Era. In spite of becoming
deaf later in life, he is famous for
shaping the scope of instrumental
music and raising it to the highest
plane of art.
